The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) has recognised 29 members at its 2026 President's Awards Dinner in London, presenting five Gold, seven Silver and 17 Bronze Medals.

The total is up from 19 at the 2025 dinner, when CIBSE said four Gold, four Silver and 11 Bronze Medals were presented. CIBSE describes the dinner as an annual event held each October.

Medal 2025 2026
Gold 4 5
Silver 4 7
Bronze 11 17

CIBSE describes the Gold Medal as the highest accolade within the institution. The Silver Medal is for outstanding service or significant contributions to CIBSE and the industry, and the Bronze Medal recognises distinguished service, typically over 10 years. Nominations are open to Corporate Grade Members.

Vince Arnold, 2025/26 CIBSE President, said of last year's dinner: "The President's Awards Dinner gives us the opportunity to celebrate those who go above and beyond". The 2026 announcement does not say who presided this year.

Gold Medals

The 2026 Gold Medal recipients were David Arnold, Kwok-Cheung Thomas Chan, Paddy Conaghan, John Field and Peter Kinsella.

CIBSE said David Arnold, its President in 1994, has contributed to building services engineering for more than 65 years and strengthened collaboration with ASHRAE through more than five decades of membership.

Thomas Chan directed nine major developments under Hong Kong's £16.7bn Hospital Development Plan, according to CIBSE, and championed Modular Integrated Construction. He has served as Hong Kong Region Chair and as a Council member.

Paddy Conaghan, a CIBSE Vice President who chaired the BIM Group and the Premises Advisory Committee, was credited with delivering the institution's new headquarters. CIBSE announced that office on 19 December 2024 at 91-94 Saffron Hill, London EC1N 8QP, spanning 16,995 sq ft across lower ground with mezzanine, ground and three upper floors, up from the 9,311 sq ft of its former office.

John Field, President in 2016-17, was principal author of TM46, which CIBSE said informs the industry's approach to building performance evaluation and energy benchmarking. He chairs CIBSE Certification Ltd and is a Trustee of the CIBSE Benevolent Fund.

Peter Kinsella, President in 2013, served on the Australia and New Zealand Regional Committee. CIBSE said he will receive his award at a later date.

Silver and Bronze Medals

The Silver Medal recipients were Ian Giles, for work on Guide M, SFG20 and asset standards; Ka-Yue Leung, for service as Hong Kong Regional Chair; John Mardaljevic, for pioneering Climate Based Daylight Modelling and leading the CIBSE Daylight Group; Kevin Mitchell, President in 2022; Andrew More, for leading the CIBSE Heritage and Retrofit Group and advocating evidence-based decarbonisation of historic buildings; Tadj Oreszczyn, for his contribution as Vice President, academic leader and government adviser; and Brian Whitehead, for leadership across committees and mentorship.

The 17 Bronze Medal recipients were David Battersby, Ingrid Berkeley, Roger Birchmore, Leslie Copeland, Keith Elliott, Stephen Gathergood, Richard Gilpin, Patrick Leung, Tim Moxom, Shunil Parmar, Sophie Parry, Sonia Pepperell, Dimple Rana, Mohammad Rezvan, Christopher Underwood, Stephen Weir and Peter White. CIBSE said Bronze Medals recognise dedicated service to the institution, the building services community and local networks.

Additional honours

Emmanouil Perisoglou received the Dufton Silver Medal and John Mardaljevic also took the Barker Silver Medal. Andy Shea received the Carter Bronze Medal, Masha Sayfikar the Napier Shaw Bronze Medal and May Zune the Brian Moss Fan Makers Award.

Ken Butcher, CIBSE Editorial Manager, received a President's Commendation for 49 years of service to the institution.

Yijun Liu was awarded the Ken Dale Bursary 2026. CIBSE says the travel bursary is worth up to £4,000 depending on the scope and destination of the project, is open to applicants with no more than ten years' experience in building services engineering, and requires a written report of 5,000 to 10,000 words. The bursary honours Ken Dale, who chaired the Charter Panel that helped secure CIBSE's Royal Charter and was Senior Partner, Chairman and Managing Director of Dale and Goldfinger Ltd.

CIBSE is named on the UK regulated professions register as the body for chartered building services engineers; according to GOV.UK, its Fellows and Members must also meet the Engineering Council's requirements for Chartered Engineer. Nominations for the 2026 medals are now closed.
